Brief Introduction   Land degradation affects us all directly or indirectly: food insecurity, pests, reduced availability of clean water, increased vulnerability to climate change, biodiversity loss, and much more. However, policy often fails to acknowledge this problem or is incapable to identify solutions. That’s why we offer this MOOC, to help understand how to influence policymaking to foster sustainable soil protection and rehabilitation. Theoretical and methodological input by experts will help you to clarify specific policy objectives, the preferred modes of communication of your target group, and to identify the most suitable engagement techniques or activities. You will have the opportunity to exchange views and experiences with experts and participants and work on the topic  in  an international network of practitioners, scientists and policymakers.   This event will take place during The second meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI2) in Montreal Canada room 7A on 12th July 2018!    This is a joint project between BES-Net hosted by UNDP, and UNEP-WCMC entitled ‘ Undertaking national ecosystem assessment in developing countries’ is designed to build the capacity of four developing countries (Cameroon, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Viet Nam). This side event will use case-study style presentations to showcase practical examples of the assessment progress in each country since 2016. A panel discussion will follow on the role of ecosystem assessment in the post-2020 agenda and how assessment findings will be integrated into national decision-making processes. There will be an opportunity to explore the impacts and benefits of national ecosystem assessments for national and sub-national decision making.

On Friday, 9 December 2016, the event “Launch of the UNDP-managed Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BES-Net) Web Portal” took place at the Convention of Biological Diversity COP13. Presented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this video by IISD Reporting Services provides an overview of the event, which reviewed a new, cutting-edge platform to build capacity and promote global dialogue among science, policy and practice.
