The Cities Lead oversees the implementation of our strategies related to urban areas in India, including, but not limited to, nature-based solutions to climate change, climate adaptation, green printing, and ‘development by design’. They provide scientific/technical leadership as a subject matter expert for urban conservation in a variety of initiatives, including urban water body restoration, green/nature-based infrastructure, urban conservation planning, and other priority urban conservation initiatives. They will build upon the current body of work to have a cohesive and comprehensive cities conservation strategy to meet the organization’s relevant Shared Conservation Agenda (SCA) Goals related to conservation, restoration, and climate change.
The Cities Lead builds the organization’s scientific and programmatic capacity in the field and collaborates with other scientists, practitioners, and institutions to enhance our impact, both at the field and policy level. They also negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies, academic and research institutions, corporations, and local partners to conserve and protect natural habitats as well as communities and develops and implements conservation strategies at scale. The Cities Lead strives to mainstream conservation and climate mitigation/adaptation strategies in the cities/regional/national planning processes. They develop and manages the Cities team, consultants, and partners in order to ensure effective and successful delivery of our priority projects. They will also help establish TNC as a major player within the Indian urban conservation space and represent the organization in a variety of fora.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Develops and implements the strategy to achieve the organization’s goals and quantified targets related to urban area conservation, restoration and climate change mitigation and adaptation, including those related to people metrics.
  • Strengthens and expands the India Cities program for impact at scale. Ensures that the program achieves its strategic objectives.
  • Recruits, retains, and manages high quality and effective multi-disciplinary staff, consultants, and partners with responsibility for performance management and successful delivery of projects. 
  • Acts as the technical liaison within and outside of the organization; may provide training on urban conservation issues, including planning, water body restoration, green infrastructure, urban tree canopies, and other related issues.
  • Supports team members to effectively implement complex projects with our partners, including restoring a major urban water body and building out additional conservation initiatives. 
  • Makes strategic decisions based on sound analysis and judgement in consultation with the organization’s leadership.
  • Collaborates with a wide range of partners to identify projects, associated research needs, present technical concepts, and support fieldwork.
  • Negotiates complex agreements, managing risks and anticipating challenges.
  • Leads stakeholder consultations on urban conservation issues.
  • Co-leads preparation of succinct reports and other communication products for a wide range of audiences.
  • Promotes TNC leadership and visibility in the area of urban conservation.
  • Is responsible for all budgeting and financial management aspects of the program and/or specific projects.                                                                            
  • Establishes and maintains optimal performance standards within budget.
  • Co-leads program business development and fundraising, including overseeing contracts, proposals, and client reports.            
  • Resolves complex problems through systematic and thorough analysis and effective program leadership and management.
  • Persuasively conveys NCIS mission and USP to diverse groups including potential clients, corporates, academics, and others critical to the organizational vision and mission.
  • May require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally.
