The Community Stewardship Program Assistant will support the Community Stewardship Program by coordinating and leading volunteers at community stewardship workdays. The purpose of the Program Assistant is to further restoration, conservation, and community engagement in Chicago Park District Natural Areas, complementing the efforts of Department of Cultural and Natural Resources. This position will be under the supervision of the Community Stewardship Program Manager, a shared position between the Chicago Park District and The Nature Conservancy. This is full-time, temporary 12-month position. The starting hourly rate for this position is $21.00 per hour.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Community Stewardship Program Assistant’s primary role is to be out in the field supporting volunteer leaders (“Community Stewards”), engaging new volunteers, and promoting Chicago Park District Natural Areas in collaboration with CPD staff, contractors, and partners. Activities during a CPD Natural Areas workday may include: planting, pulling invasive plants, mulching trails, collecting seeds, picking up litter, nature walks and building relationships between community members and CPD Natural Areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Lead volunteers during stewardship workdays, working alongside community stewards where appropriate
  • Support Community Stewards by way of:
    • delivering tools and herbicide supplies;
    • providing ecological training and expertise;
    • supporting native seed collection, processing, and sharing.
  • Maintain stewardship volunteer database, keep records of workday activities and attendance
  • Instruct volunteers of diverse ages and abilities in the use of restoration tools and practices
  • Attend and represent CPD and TNC at events by disseminating information about the stewardship program
