Pollination is one of numerous services that ecosystems provide to humans. It underpins food production and security while also contributing to gene flows and the restoration of ecosystems.
Pollinator-dependent crops contribute to 35 per cent of global crop production volume. Yet, with increasing threats to pollinator populations – particularly bees and other wild species – and nearly 16.5 per cent of vertebrate pollinators facing extinction, immediate action is needed. Shifting away from intensive agriculture, limiting the use of harmful pesticides and tackling biodiversity loss is critical. BES-Net’s work on pollinator conservation builds on the IPBES assessment on pollinators, pollination and food production.
