One of the six priorities of UN Environment is that countries utilize the ecosystem approach (an approach to natural resource management that focuses on sustaining ecosystems to meet both ecological and human needs in the future) to enhance human well-being. UN Environment supports countries in integrating the approach into development and planning processes, acquiring the capacity to use ecosystem management tools, and realigning their environmental programs and financing to tackle the degradation of selected priority ecosystem services (i.e. regulating services such as water purification and waste treatment, provisioning services such as capture fisheries, cultural services such as recreation and ecotourism and supporting services such as nutrient cycling and primary production).
