Ethiopia is an ecologically diverse country with a wide range of ecosystems, including humid forests, wetlands and deserts. These ecosystems have experienced biodiversity loss due to factors such as habitat destruction and fragmentation in favour of agriculture and urbanization, pollution, overexploitation, human population growth and climate change. BES-Net is facilitating the assessment process in Ethiopia, with support from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of Ethiopia, the Ethiopia Biodiversity Institute and UNEP-WCMC.

  • The national ecosystem assessment team is organizing national consultations through trialogues to bring together the policy, science and practice communities to contribute to the process.
  • Ethiopia is also a priority country for future catalytic support under BES-Net II’s BES Solution Fund to promote the uptake of national ecosystem assessment recommendations once the process is finalized.
