Colombia’s NEA launch

30 June 2021

Colombia, responsible for 10% of global biodiversity, displays a general trend of serious deterioration of its biodiversity. At least 10% of Colombian GDP depends directly on natural resources. The Colombian population loses 3.3 years of healthy life annually due to environmental factors.

If the loss and degradation of biodiversity is not reduced, the lives of Colombians would be at stake. To break the dynamics of loss and degradation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, it is crucial to promote transformative changes based on the dialogue of knowledge, which generates quality knowledge and information for effective decision-making.

Colombia embarked on a National Ecosystem Assessment journey in October 2017 with a team that included:

– 105 Experts
– 3 Co-Chairs
– 13 Chapter Coordinators
– 47 Leading Authors
– 42 Contributing authors
– 3 Reviewing Editors
– Technical Support Unit

The NEA findings, with a horizon of validity until 2050, provide strategic information on the state and trends of biodiversity linked to human well-being in Colombia. Colombia’s NEA seeks to facilitate a clearer political approach by characterizing where we come from in terms of the state and change of the attributes of nature and society, and the reciprocal links between the two. On the other hand, it seeks to illustrate where we are going, in terms of change trajectories and possible futures (Chapter 7, see Box 1).

The official launch of Colombia’s NEA will take place on 30 June 2021 at 9 am COL time.

The assessment will be broadcast live on:
