Description

The Communications Director will serve as bridge between State Affairs and senior communications professionals who are supporting workstreams/initiatives at the subnational level in the U.S., ensuring that messaging is consistent around goals and strategies, while also executed in a manner that maximizes impact in the socio-economic context of a given state.

This position also will provide guidance and support to State Directors in securing the appropriate communications capacity to elevate the EDF’s brand as an enduring presence in key states and developing and implementing multi-pronged communications strategies to elevate EDF’s visibility and credibility in key states.

The Communications Director will report to the Senior Communications Director, Political Affairs.

LOCATION

Remote.  This role can also be performed in the Austin, Boulder, New York City, Raleigh, and Washington, DC  areas on a flexible/hybrid arrangement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all communications functions for the State Affairs and field ops teams within Political Affairs.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for State Affairs in the development and implementation of Political Affairs campaigns:
    • Bring a state-based communications perspective to the design of campaigns;
    • Provide advanced notice to state directors on the timing and scale of upcoming campaigns, so that they can be integrated with ongoing work;
    • Mobilize state directors and field ops teams to execute campaign communications in relevant media markets for targeted members of congress.
  • Serve as bridge between State Affairs and senior communications professionals who are supporting workstreams/initiatives at the subnational level in the U.S., ensuring that messaging is consistent around goals and strategies, while also executed in a manner that maximizes impact in the socio-economic context of a given state.
  • Provide guidance and support to state directors in securing the appropriate communications capacity to elevate the EDF’s brand as an enduring presence in key states.
  • Provide guidance and support to state directors in developing and implementing multi-pronged communications strategies to elevate EDF’s visibility and credibility in key states.
  • Supervise program operations, including development and oversight of strategies, budgets and workplans for key programmatic initiatives.
  • Build program visibility among key stakeholder groups and impact through leveraged partnerships and network expansion.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and thought leadership internally and externally, and engage academics, scientists, policy experts, and others to solve complex climate challenges.
  • Engage with media to advance project objectives and communicate project results to a broad array of audiences.
  • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
