Description

The Director, Editorial and Content Development provides vision and leadership over a broad and integrated content strategy that facilitates the comprehension, adoption and advancement of the organization’s goals and business objectives. They are responsible for ensuring strategic alignment of all content across the organization, in support of the Marketing and Communications divisions strategies, and they collaborate extensively with TNC’s channel and audience owners. This position is a key role in TNC’s Marketing and Communications Division, reporting to the Senior Director of Storytelling and Content Management.

The Director, Editorial and Content Development serves as TNC’s digital editor-in-chief, ideating, commissioning, and generating original, compelling stories for our key audiences. They focus on high-priority tentpole and key promotional and news moments, as well as provide a steady stream of multimedia stories for each platform and channel.

The position is responsible for upholding the highest editorial standards and fostering innovative approaches to storytelling. They break down complicated topics and make them clear, interesting, and useful.

The Director oversees the editorial calendar and is accountable for working with channel owners to set content goals and implement cohesive measurement plans to understand program success. They make real-time program adjustments based on results, and they optimize editorial workflows to provide capacity for proactive opportunities and timely responses to incoming content requests.

The Director, Editorial and Content Development manages a team of in-house content creators, assigning projects, overseeing work, creating a collaborative environment and fostering professional growth, while serving as a primary contact for all other content owners and creators across the organization. They cultivate and manage an expanding network of expert freelance writers, contributors, editors, and sources. They create playbooks and toolkits to make our global work more consistent and efficient. They provide direction, guide best practices for content creation, and facilitate on-going communication between all parts of the globally dispersed Marketing and Communications division, and internal and external stakeholders. They will join the Storytelling and Content Management Leadership Team, working closely with their fellow Storytelling team leads and the Senior Director to create one cohesive, collaborative Storytelling division that exponentially improves brand storytelling and the efficiency and ROI of content across TNC channels.

Are you a creative marketing pen-slinger with a mastery of written content, hypnotizing storytelling skills, and hard-won experience transforming complex science into epic poetry that moves hearts and opens wallets? Do you think strategically and globally? Are you goal-oriented, and do you enjoy working in a fast-paced culture in a virtual world?

You are a pro at shaping stories with a compelling voice and angle and should feel comfortable collaborating with writers across the organization to reframe stories.

In this role, you will be a storyteller with heart but will also consistently deliver high-quality content and strategy that aligns with our brand’s personality. You must be a team player since you’ll collaborate with C-Suite, senior stakeholders, and all members across Marketing and Communications.

You feel comfortable working with data to understand audience interest and use that to help guide editorial strategy. However, you also embrace innovative storytelling and experiment with new types of content. You will bring fresh, innovative content ideas and solutions as well as executional excellence to our strategy.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and minimum 10 years related work experience or an equivalent combination, including at least 3 years’ experience at a senior management level.
  • Experience developing communications, media and engagement strategies and measuring results.
  • Experience cultivating and managing relationships with senior level executives, Board of Trustees, Board of Directors and/or national media contacts.
  • Experience in program management, including broad financial responsibility and measuring results of strategic plans.
  • Experience managing a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience fostering an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Experience designing, directing and implementing multiple projects.
