Description

The Director of People and Culture works in close cooperation with the Executive Director and as part of the Maryland/DC Chapter’s Executive Team to support the Chapter’s conservation outcomes through sound administration and a strong organizational culture. He/she/they will lead and champion the chapter’s efforts to become more inclusive, diverse, just and equitable. He/she/they provides leadership and management of the Chapter’s recruiting, onboarding, and retention.  The Director of People and Culture must have/acquire advanced knowledge of the Conservancy’s systems and resources and apply that knowledge in managing operations staff and coordinating with staff state- and Conservancy-wide. He/she/they works in close cooperation with any or all of the following: Conservancy staff; trustees, vendors, public agencies, financial institutions, consultants and legal   professionals. In addition, he/she/they will assist the West Virginia chapter staff of 10 in developing training and professional growth opportunities.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE    

  • Develop and execute strategies to support a capable, engaged, and energetic employee community.
  • Identify and implement programs to foster an open, reflective, and inclusive culture.
  • Lead the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice (DEIJ) chapter committee, executing the DEIJ learning journey and associated chapter, division, and regional initiatives.
  • Nurture a workplace climate of connectedness, innovation, and inclusion that empowers staff.
  • Coach and counsel employees on a wide range of HR related business topics including performance management, professional development, compensation and talent development.
  • Build and implement a robust and flexible learning and growth strategy that meets the needs of our evolving organization, including manager development, coaching, mentoring, and succession planning, and new hire orientation learning for all employees regardless of seniority or position.
  • Oversight of administrative processes in the Bethesda Office, Maryland/DC satellite offices and home offices (management of central administrative functions, facilities, telecommunications, telephone/public reception, office supplies and equipment maintenance, and purchasing).
  • Coordinate and assist in post-Covid flexible office work conditions and transition back to office work.
  • Maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally-charged information.
  • Supervise one or more professional staff, including training, performance management and professional development.
  • Ensure a productive, engaged and innovative workplace of leaders, by providing all staff with opportunities, enrichment activities, and the technology/tools needed to be effective and motivated resulting in enhanced staff capacity, confidence, and motivation.
  • Develop and implement best-in-class people strategies and initiatives to achieve our mission.
  • Collaborate with Executive Team to develop and implement strategies to increase board diversity.
  • Travel on short notice, working long or flexible hours as needed.
