The Lands Programme at NCIS consists of land-based conservation and restoration projects in high-priority regions of India. The overall goal of these projects is to achieve biodiversity and climate outcomes, with associated benefits to people. The main role of the Field Officer -Conservation is to provide technical expertise and coordination support to conservation projects in the North-eastern states. The projects within this portfolio consist of community-based documentation of biodiversity, community conserved areas and economic models that incentivize conservation. Projects are implemented with partner organizations and in collaboration with governmental agencies. This position is expected to be based within the North-eastern states; the specific location within this region can be decided upon mutual agreement. The position will involve a significant amount of frequent travel to all project sites within the region and occasionally to other regions as needed. This position is with an initial one-year contract, renewable upon mutual agreement.

WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOU

The Field Officer – Conservation is responsible for anchoring NCIS work in the Northeast and is expected to provide both technical and project management inputs to projects being undertaken by implementation partners. The incumbent will also maintain relationships with all relevant stakeholders and ensure appropriate coordination and alignment with key policies. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, contributing to the programme in both technical and managerial capacities.

The Field Officer – Conservation will undertake the following functions, in collaboration with the project lead and within the overall organizational mandate:
Roles and responsibilities:

  • Technical support for the conservation projects operational in the region, including adaptive management as required
  • Support for project management, including budget management; monitoring and delivery of outputs; contracting with partner organizations and consultants; and internal and external reporting
  • Contribution to project development, including ideation for new/expanded projects; development of concept notes, logical frameworks and proposals; and identification of external collaboration opportunities
  • Stakeholder relationships, including establishing and maintaining relationships with governmental agencies; close coordination with implementation partners; and effective coordination within the NCIS system

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in ecology, conservation, natural resource management or a relevant social science or another related field of study and minimum 6 years of related experience in application of these skills to conservation, environment, natural resource management, or any related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Field experience in conservation projects in Northeast India
  • Exeperience developing and building partnerships with governmental agencies, civil society and local communities
  • Experience in collaborative planning and implementation with local communities, particularly to ensure equity in conservation
  • Experience with spoken and written English, as well as one or more languages relevant to the existing project sites

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in ecology, conservation, natural resource management or a relevant social science or another related field of study and minimum 8-10 years of related experience in application of these skills to conservation, environment, natural resource management, or An understanding of carbon science
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English, as well as one or more languages relevant to the existing project sites
  • Clear understanding of policies, laws, and mechanisms relevant to conservation in India and the Northeast in particular
  • Experience of working with governance systems across multiple scales within states
  • Well networked across relevant organizations in different parts of the country
  • Demonstrated competence in both technical and non-technical writing skills
  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated
