This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our mission of conservation and to be a member of the operations team for the Kansas and Nebraska business units.  The position is varied and includes accounting, private awards (grants) administration, financial reporting, and related financial activities for the Kansas and Nebraska business units.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a position that includes both hands-on transactional activities and coordinating accounting, finance and related processes.  The Finance Manager assists and provides information to all levels of staff in a variety of accounting, finance and related areas based on advanced knowledge of management accounting and finance principals, TNC policies and procedures and business unit processes, finances and budgets. Works closely with, and with guidance from, the DFO for Kansas and Nebraska.

A. Budgeting, Monitoring, and Year-end close (~30%)

  1. With DFO, develop budgets, forecast and sustainability plans for Kansas and Nebraska business units by consulting with each business unit’s program staff. With DFO present budget for review to each business unit’s leadership team.
  2. Monitor budgets and provide monthly reports to leadership teams and project managers.
  3. Maintain financial records, both electronic and hard copy, under guidance of DFO.
  4. Transfers fund at year end to reconcile balances in individual projects.

B.  General Accounting/Finance (~20%)

  1. Performs general accounting duties, including preparing and entering journal entries.
  2. Advanced user of TNC’s financial management and budget systems (Insight, a product of Unit4 Agresso; and Adaptive, a product of Workday, Inc.).
  3. Oversee, provide guidance on, and directly perform accounts payable processing to include reviewing payment requests and expense reports submitted by Kansas and Nebraska Business Unit staffs.
  4. Deposit checks for either Kansas or Nebraska business unit, depending on office location. Provide general oversight for, cash/check/credit card deposit and receipting function. Collaborate closely with Development Operations and other staff. Process journal entries for non-constituent deposits for the other business unit’s non-constituent deposits.
  5. Perform designated balance sheet and clearing account analysis to timely resolve issues.
  6. Collaborate with TNC’s World Office (WO) Accounting functions and Finance Resource Center on various accounting and finance issues. Quarterly certify leases, depreciable assets, land, and pledges.
  7. Maintain financial structure resources (projects, activities, and awards).
  8. Provide training staff on various general accounting and finance details and processes.
  9. Monitor accounting and management controls and processes to ensure compliance with TNC accounting policies and procedures, relevant legal and regulatory frameworks, and best practices.

C. Private Award Financial Management (~30%)

  1. Work with conservation and development staff to review funding proposals and administer private awards.
  2. Maintain auditable private award files.
  3. Advanced practitioner of private award processes.
  4. Use private award module of Insight system for tracking some awards and general ledger for other awards, at direction of DFO.
  5. Maintain private award financial summaries, updating per schedule, alerting award project/budget manager of issues and upcoming award end dates.
  6. Collaborate with government grants specialist and other operations staff on overlapping government and private awards.

D. Analysis and Reporting (~10%)

  1. Run, file, distribute and analyze reports, on both an ad-hoc basis and per regular schedules, for DFO, budget managers, or other staff.
  2. Assist DFO with quarterly finance reports for Boards of Trustees, including preparing consolidated reports (income statement, balance sheet, summary of funds, etc.)

E. Other (~10%)

  1. Assist and provides backup to other operations staff as needed or as directed by DFO.
  2. Participates in Operations, Business Unit, Divisional, Regional and TNC-wide meetings, trainings, etc.
  3. Performs own employee administrative tasks such as expense reports, timecards, performance self-evaluations, etc.
