The Programme Assistant will support the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa in implementing key programmes within the Natural Sciences Sector, including the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, the Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (LINKS) Programme, and STEM/STI initiatives. The role focuses on biodiversity, climate change, Indigenous knowledge, and scientific cooperation across Africa—helping advance the SDGs, Agenda 2063, and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Job Responsibilities
Programme Support

Assist in planning, monitoring, and reporting activities under MAB, LINKS, IGGP, STEM, and STI.

Prepare work plans, concept notes, terms of reference, and funding proposals.

Monitor timelines and budgets in line with UNESCO requirements.
Research and Knowledge Management

Compile and synthesize data on biodiversity, ILK, STI, and STEM.

Maintain databases and support drafting of publications and knowledge products.
Partnerships and Coordination

Liaise with governments, UN agencies, academia, and local stakeholders.

Organize meetings, workshops, UN days, and capacity-building events.

Draft briefs, talking points, and official correspondence.
Communication and Visibility

Document success stories, lessons learned, and best practices.

Support visibility efforts through communications materials and updates.
Job Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resource management, wildlife management, climate change, or a related field. Training in project management, gender, or M&E is an asset.

Experience:
-
At least 2 years supporting projects related to biodiversity, ILK, climate change, or STEM.

Experience with Indigenous communities, local governments, or transboundary initiatives.

Experience in organizing events, preparing documents, and data management.

Skills: Proficiency in MS Office; familiarity with Zoom or Teams.

Languages: Excellent written and spoken English.
