The Southeast Alaska Program Director directs some or all aspects of protection, science, stewardship, and community relations for TNC in Southeast Alaska, working closely with the Alaska State Director and Alaska leadership team.  The SE Program Director serves as the principal contact to government agencies, tribal entities, other conservation organizations, foundations, and the academic community. They establish the Conservancy as a major conservation partner within Southeast Alaska. As an integral part of TNC in Alaska’s long term conservation vision, the Director will help define conservation priorities and develop conservation strategies. They build strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field. They develop innovative partnerships, scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks to address the natural system needs, engage local community support for local conservation efforts, and negotiate complex and innovative solutions with tribal entities, government agencies, communities, and landowners to conserve and protect nature and the livelihoods that depend on a healthy environment.

• The Southeast Alaska Program covers a large geographic region that is nested within the TNC-Alaska Business Unit, and the Emerald Edge whole system geography, including Alaska, Canada, Washington, and Oregon.
• Programmatic scope requires cross-boundary work and relationships with partners across state and country borders within the coastal temperate rainforest, as well as connections with relevant TNC global teams such as the Indigenous Peoples, Lands, and Communities team.
• Responsible for co-leading a whole system program like Emerald Edge with leadership from Canada, Washington and Oregon business units.
• Lead and manage teams and projects to support and improve conservation efforts.
• Manage and supervise multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training, and career development. Establish clear priorities as a team and individually and set stretch objectives.
• Establish and maintain optimal standards of accomplishment for the program, while controlling costs and administering budgets.
• Responsible for public and private funding to meet program needs, in collaboration with our philanthropy and marketing teams.
• Build and sustain collaborative networks with external parties to accomplish program goals.
• Ability to make independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context, with the skill and judgment to involve BU leadership when decisions may impact TNC’s reputation or involve other potentially high-risk factors.
• Approach conservation and relationships with a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
• May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. May travel domestically to conduct business.
