Description

The Mukwonago Land Management Intern will support habitat restoration and land stewardship across TNC preserves in the Mukwonago River Watershed. The intern will assist with invasive species control, agricultural research, and aquatic invasive species outreach under the guidance of the Southeast Wisconsin Stewardship Coordinator.

This is a full-time, 12-week paid internship, running from June through August 2026, at $17.00/hour, approximately 35 hours per week. Housing is not provided. Interns must arrange their own transportation to the East Troy office and work sites.

Job Responsibilities

General Land Management (50%)

  • Restore oak savannas and prairies, remove invasive species, maintain trails and signage, and dismantle fencing.

  • Operate land management equipment (tractors, UTVs, brush cutters, chainsaws, herbicide application).

  • Assist with ecological monitoring of TNC preserves.

Agricultural Research (30%)

  • Support field data collection for local agriculture partners, including activities related to nitrogen optimization, cover crops, and no-till methods.

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) (20%)

  • Engage the public at boat launches via Clean Boats/Clean Waters program.

  • Assist in AIS mapping, removal, and biological control (e.g., purple loosestrife beetles).

Additional Activities

  • Attend intern orientation (4 June 2026, Madison, WI).

  • Option to participate in TNC Wisconsin All Staff retreat (15–18 June 2026).

  • Work under variable weather, physically demanding conditions, and remote field settings.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience.

  • Must be currently enrolled in college or a recent graduate (within the last 12 months).

  • Relevant coursework in natural resources, environmental studies, biology, or a related field.

Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in outdoor physical work and following field instructions.

  • Valid driver’s license and eligibility under TNC’s Auto Safety Program.

  • Ability to work both independently and in teams.

  • Must be comfortable working in remote field conditions and variable weather.
