Armenia

Overview

Armenia is host to a wide variety of ecosystems including forests, alpine grasslands, wetlands and other freshwater ecosystems that critically support water security, food production, climate regulation and community livelihoods and well-being. This wealth of natural capital is threatened by increasing pressure from climate change, land degradation, unsustainable land use practices, deforestation, overgrazing and growing competition for natural resources. This has propelled the active engagement of Armenia in biodiversity processes to address the threats identified and ensure sustainable management of Armenia’s rich biodiversity.

Following Armenia’s strong political will and proactive engagement in global biodiversity processes – and its efforts to steer action towards sustainable biodiversity management in response to these processes – the country was selected to receive support from the BES Solution Fund under the BES-Net initiative. This seed fund is envisaged to catalyse biodiversity action and implementation of interventions that, in close coordination with complementary initiatives, will contribute directly to national biodiversity strategies and plans and associated institutional frameworks and partnerships, promoting a more streamlined and sustainable approach to biodiversity conservation in the country.

Through the BES Solution Fund support, Armenia seeks to strengthen its national biodiversity priorities by integrating IPBES assessments on ecosystem services, landscape restoration and conservation, the sustainable use of natural resources into ongoing NBSAP updates and other sectoral policies. The key actions envisaged include:

  1. Strengthening the integration of biodiversity and ecosystem services into national policy and planning frameworks
  2. Enhancing coordination, capacity and engagement of key stakeholders, including government institutions with policymakers, scientists, local communities and practitioners.
  3. Supporting practical, replicable approaches to ecosystem service valuation, monetization and implementation of nature-positive measures that contribute to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable development in Armenia
