TNC is seeking to hire an exceptional individual as the Associate Director of Conservation Strategy, Asia Pacific. This position reports to the Director of Conservation Strategy, Asia Pacific. The base location for this position is flexible within the Asia Pacific region where TNC is present.

The Associate Director of Conservation Strategy, Asia Pacific, works for the Asia Pacific regional program to lead complex conservation strategies in the region in partnership with TNC country and global programs. They provide leadership and coordination across all aspects of a strategy: conservation, science, staffing, finance, and internal and external partnerships. They leverage the full range of expertise across the Conservancy to enable country programs in the Asia Pacific region to tackle highly complex projects and make rapid progress on them.

In close collaboration with staff in Country and Global teams, the Associate Director of Conservation Strategy, Asia Pacific designs and supports the implementation of conservation strategies in the Asia Pacific. They coordinate and align the work of conservation, science, partnerships, legal, investment, and fundraising staff and contractors to advance a small number of priority strategies. This includes an initial focus on forest conservation strategies in Kalimantan, Indonesia. They improve conservation outcomes through building strategic, scientific, and technical capacity with country programs in the Asia Pacific, managing budgets and work to deadlines, and leading communications with important stakeholders internally and externally. They cultivate collaborative working partnerships with the Asia Pacific regional country teams and with other staff across the Conservancy to increase the pace, scale, and impact of our conservation strategies.

The Associate Director of Conservation Strategy, Asia Pacific will be responsible for the following:

  • Lead and support the development of a priority set of conservation strategies or initiatives that require strong partnership across global and Asia Pacific teams (exact needs will depend on the initiative).
  • There will be a focus initially on forest related strategies in Kalimantan, Indonesia.
  • Manages a budget and delivers to deadlines.
  • Leads a matrixed team.
  • May supervise staff and contractors.
  • Frequently makes strategic decision based on analysis and context.
  • Negotiates complex agreements.
  • Writes reports and funding proposals.
  • Supports development of partnerships of strategic relevance for Asia Pacific.
  • Frequent travel internationally, including evening and weekend hours.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
