Description

Are you a talented lawyer with a background in freedom of expression or media law? Are you keen to use these skills to work towards a green and peaceful future?

Then you may be the right person to join Greenpeace International’s (GPI’s) Legal Unit as an Associate Legal Counsel Communications. Your role would be to provide independent, integrated communications-related legal advice, support and training to Greenpeace International and the Greenpeace network. You will be working together with the lawyers in the Greenpeace International Legal Unit in order to proactively and reactively defend the global Greenpeace network, its integrity and reputation, staff and assets with direction from the Senior Legal Counsel Strategic Defence and Legal Counsel Campaigns. You will be supporting the development and dissemination of standards for risk assessment procedures related to communications and investigations.

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Conducting legal review of communications materials for risks under, for example, defamation, data protection or intellectual property law

  • Providing legal advice and support to campaign, research, investigations and communications staff (including training of non-lawyers to understand legal risk)

  • Dealing with disputes and litigation

  • Engaging in public interest litigation to secure the enabling environment

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with Greenpeace’s internal and external network of legal advisers and allies

  • Developing and maintaining knowledge of international human rights law, media law and information law
