In South Africa, TNC works with government, private sector, NGOs, and community stakeholders to restore priority catchments and conserve important landscapes, freshwater ecosystems, and oceans.
Key Responsibilities
- Collecting baseline data to inform and plan restoration activities.
Quality control of invasive plant control and active terrestrial and freshwater activities. - Planning restoration activities, including coordination and deployment of work teams
- Building the capacity of field teams to improve execution of restoration activities and methodologies.
- Providing guidance to field teams to improve worksite management and site safety.
- Coordinating training interventions to develop the skills of local field teams.
- Preparing progress reports, monitoring progress of work teams and capture key lessons to improve nature-based activities.
- Field surveys to determine condition of native vegetation and soils.
- Checking that the health and safety compliance procedures in field are adhered to and corrected as needed.
- Organizing, planning and hosting workshops
- Work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience capturing and analyzing data.
- Experience managing work teams.
- Experience of broad ecological processes and biodiversity management
- Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Experience with communication via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Experience of using common software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Web browsers).
- Working knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
- Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, including government officials, internal scientists, local communities.
- Experience in data capturing and analyzing.
- Must have a valid code 8 driver’s license and over one year’s driving experience.
Desired Skills
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Over 5 years experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
- Knowledge of ecological land management principles.
- Familiarity with principles of Protected Area declaration and post-declaration support.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource management.
- Ability to identify biological threats and present suitable solutions.
