Description

The Director of Board Strategy & Operations is responsible for planning, directing and overseeing the development and engagement of the National Board and associated board committees to support the mission and programs of the Trust for Public Land. This position’s major role is to develop and manage the organization’s relationships with National Board and National Board Committee Members volunteers in order to attract and retain the highest-caliber individuals to its National Board of Directors.  The Director works with the board to support fulfillment of their responsibilities to the organization and to support a culture of inclusion and a practice of open inquiry on the board.

The person in this role will also work with the President & CEO, the Board Chair, the Volunteer Manager, and other key stakeholders to ensure that best practices are reflected in TPL’s governance processes, and appropriate opportunities exist to cultivate and develop the leadership skills and/or potential of board and prospective board members in alignment with organizational strategies and priorities.

This position reports to the President and CEO and can be located near any TPL office.

Essential Functions

Board Meeting Support

  • Plan and support Board meetings and other related meetings and activities, including but not limited to Board committee and working group meetings. Develop and maintain a running multi-year Board schedule. Coordinate communication of meeting details and support scheduling activities with Board members and their respective offices. Ensure minutes for all Board and committee meetings are prepared in a timely manner.
  • Serve as primary point person for the collection and production of all Board and committee meeting materials, overseeing coordination and ensuring that the  materials are of high quality and in alignment with our brand and strategy.
  • Manage and oversee the production of consistent, accurate, visually appealing informational materials, such as the annual Board Handbook and other informational and management materials necessary for the Board and its committees. Assist leadership with regular updates and communications to the Board. Support staff and board leadership on agenda and content development for all Board and committee meetings, including working with presenters to develop presentations and coordinating reviews with senior leadership.
  • Supports Board members as needed to ensure the smooth functioning of meetings.
  • Accountable for all aspects of off-site events and retreats. Coordinates with local staff where the meeting or retreat is taking place on logistics and arrangements and oversees the arrangements with event planners, caterers, restaurants, and hotel staff and the handling of member travel arrangements, lodging, and meal planning.

Board Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Working with board and with philanthropy and other key stakeholders identify candidates for the board in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Advise CEO, Board Leadership and Philanthropy on recruitment and pipeline development strategies, nomination activity, and general support of efforts to cultivate key relationships.
  • Collaborate with organizational leadership on board member nominations and coordination of recruitment activities
  •  Acts as the main point of contact for orienting and on-boarding new Board members, including developing content and delegating scheduling.

Board Strategy & Operations

  • Serve as a staff liaison for current and former Board members.  Collaborates and coordinates directly with relationship managers on philanthropic strategies for board members.
  • This position coordinates and collaborates with the Philanthropy Department’s Volunteer Manager to ensure seamless communications and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Insure accuracy of Board member records in constituent relationship management system.  This role plays a critical role in insuring that notes from key conversations are accurately captured and tracked.
  • Coordinate the maintenance of the official documents for the Board, including true records of meeting attendance, minutes, current Bylaws and amendments, and ensures legal notice of business meetings as provided in the Bylaws
  • Researches, benchmarks, and analyzes data, and creates recommendations for special projects that arise. Designs and produces complex documents, reports, and presentations; collects and prepares information for meetings with staff and outside parties. Composes and prepares correspondence as needed.
  • Ensures adherence to and compliance with applicable rules and regulations set in the organization’s bylaws regarding board and board committee matters.
  • Coordinate the maintenance of the official documents for the Board, including true records of meeting attendance, minutes, current Bylaws and amendments, and ensures legal notice of business meetings as provided in the Bylaws
  • Researches, benchmarks, and analyzes data, and creates recommendations for special projects that arise.
