Description

The Land Conservation Manager will be responsible for leading and implementing a land conservation program that combines planning, partnerships, science, policy, and transactions to conserve the most important lands remaining in New Jersey. They will be overseeing and representing the Conservancy in relationships and negotiations with partners including federal, state, county and municipal agencies, landowners, elected officials and other organizations to pro-actively further our conservation mission and strategic plan. The Land Conservation Manager will play a lead role to advance TNC’s efforts on the New Jersey Conservation Blueprint project focused on incorporating climate resilience science into state and local land conservation programs. They develop and implement conservation strategies, employ a full range of protection and planning tools to conserve land and implement a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities. They will work with NJ’s Indigenous Peoples, land trusts and government agencies on capacity building initiatives and to strategically transfer TNC landholdings.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Plan and direct TNC’s work on the New Jersey Conservation Blueprint. 
  • Lead major land conservation initiatives, partnerships and projects throughout New Jersey, including TNC’s work in NJ’s Appalachian focal area (Bobcat Alley), cross-state habitat connectivity work, land use planning like renewable energy siting and expands TNC’s emerging work as a trusted conservation partner with indigenous peoples of NJ. 
  • Duties will include developing, implementing, and evaluating strategy, coordinating partner, agency and stakeholder engagement, setting deadlines and managing a portfolio of projects and communicating results to a variety of audiences, including donors and supporters.                                              
  • Manage professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training and career development. 
  • Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.         
  • Responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs.
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.            
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently and on short notice, sometimes on weekends
