Description

Join a small team of multi-disciplinary staff based in Virginia, New York, and other locations along the Atlantic coast, to (1) advance ecosystem approaches to fisheries management for state, interstate, and federally managed fisheries in the Mid-Atlantic; and (2) avoid and minimize potential impacts to marine life and marine habitats from the development of offshore wind energy along the Atlantic coast. The Marine Scientist will collaborate with members of the commercial, for-hire, and recreational fishing communities, university scientists, fisheries managers, energy developers, regulatory agencies, and others to identify and resolve technical issues and widely communicate solutions and best practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Synthesize existing scientific knowledge and build partnerships to generate new knowledge.
  • May design and execute collaborative research to identify and resolve technical challenges to fisheries conservation. 
  • May manage grants, contracts, budgets and write proposals.    
  • Communicate scientific results to a non-scientific audience through spoken, written, and graphical means.  Synthesize and apply results to real-world scenarios.
  • Represent The Nature Conservancy on external committees and working groups.                        
  • Interpret guidelines, evaluate information, and modify processes to adapt to changing circumstances for the program.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances, including onboard ocean-going vessels.
