Description

The On-Call Forester is a staff member of The Nature Conservancy’s Stewardship and Field Program’s North Florida office, based in Bristol, FL.  This position works under the supervision of the North Florida Stewardship Projects Coordinator.  This position works on partner lands, primarily the Apalachicola National Forest, to implement, administer, and manage conservation timber sales and restoration projects.  These projects are only active during dry portions of the year.  The On-Call Forester will be called in on an as-needed basis immediately before, during, and after periods of timber harvest activity

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The On-Call Forester will implement and manage timber sale and restoration projects on the Apalachicola National Forest in partnership with the U. S. Forest Service.  This position is the primary contact with timber contractors and is responsible for all aspects of contractor performance while ensuring compliance with formal agreements between The Nature Conservancy and the Apalachicola National Forest.  During operable periods on the Apalachicola National Forest, the On-Call Forester is expected to devote their time fully to the implementation of timber and restoration contracts.  Between operable periods, there may be long stretches of time with no work.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Administer three (3) contracted timber sales on the Apalachicola National Forest, following existing contract terms, Best Management Practices, and TNC’s Standard Operating Procedures for contracting.
  • Administer and provide oversight for additional forest restoration contracts on the Apalachicola National Forest, including but not limited to mowing, single drum chopping, longleaf pine planting, and herbicide release using TNC contracting and purchasing SOP’s.  
  • Responsible for all aspects of contractor performance on TNC timber and restoration contracts.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors. 
  • Works in close consultation with U. S. Forest Service staff to ensure project objectives and outcomes are achieved and acceptable.  
  • Operates 4×4 vehicles and ORVs (ATVs/UTVs) in difficult terrain.  ORVs must be operated safely according to TNC ATV/UTV Operating Guidelines, which must be followed at all times.
  • May work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.  
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
