Description

NRDC is a seeking a Senior Advocate to take a nation-leading role in helping to reform and improve wholesale power markets. Working as part of the Sustainable FERC Project (“Project”) team, the person who fills this position will support and expand the Project’s work on conceiving, analyzing, and advocating for wholesale power market systems necessary to achieve the Project’s goal of decarbonizing the power sector and supporting economy-wide decarbonization. The successful candidate will represent NRDC and the Project at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC”) and in other forums. Successful candidates will have demonstrated both strong independent initiative and the ability to contribute effectively as a member of a team and collaborate across organizations.

The Project is an initiative housed in NRDC’s Climate & Clean Energy Program, and it represents the interests of national and regional environmental organizations on FERC-regulated grid issues and policies related to the deployment of renewable energy, demand response, energy efficiency, distributed generation and energy storage. The Project serves as a voice of the environmental and clean energy community at FERC and in FERC-jurisdictional grid market and planning regions on electric system policies and regional transmission grid planning processes.

The Project’s current priorities include removing market barriers in the RTOs/ISOs to ensure a level playing field for renewable energy, energy storage, and demand-side resources, protecting state clean energy policy priorities from federal preemption or discrimination, reforming rules for transmission planning and cost allocation, reforming FERC’s gas infrastructure policies, and improving public participation and governance at FERC and FERC-regulated transmission organizations and system operators. Responsibilities

  • Refine and advocate for FERC-jurisdictional solutions to achieve the Sustainable FERC Project’s mission and goals for clean energy development and a low-carbon electricity future, including solutions for wholesale electricity market design and performance and transmission planning/cost allocation.
  • Provide counsel and guidance to coalition members on FERC-related energy policy issues, including issues impacting both federal and state authority over electricity.
  • Work with electric power sector industry experts, participating in stakeholder meetings, industry conferences, and workshops.
  • Represent our coalition and NRDC at FERC and FERC-jurisdictional planning and market regions, Congress, state commissions, and other forums and proceedings.
  • Support the Sustainable FERC Project’s and NRDC’s communications goals by drafting blogs and issue papers, responding to media inquiries, and taking other actions necessary to support the initiative.
