Description

Forest fire is undoubtedly most destructive event that can occur to any forest estate at any time,provided the perfect conditions for ignition. These events repeatedly occur each year destroying the flora/fauna of an area, devastating the ecosystem and in worst case scenarios, fatally claiming various human lives and injuring many more. To counter these unfortunate events, The WWF Pakistan launched an innovative project that can mitigate these problems and safeguard theforests of Pakistan.

Forest fire detection- EWS is surely the most advance and one of its kind system, developed
indigenously in Pakistan by WWF- Pakistan with the collaboration of LUMS Lahore. Initially this system is piloted at two different locations of KP (i.e Palm Gali/Ogi, Agror Tanawal Forest Division and Danna Gulfam, Kaghan Forest Division). This system is capable of priorly or timely detection of any forest fire incident which falls under its line of sight and notify it to the control room for quick and efficient action thus preventing the valuable flora and fauna of the respective area. Upon the successful trials and validation, this system will be updated and expanded to more locations. Furthermore, Forest department will also be trained and equipped with fire fighting equipments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as a communication bridge between KP Forest Department, WWF-Pakistan and LUMS
  • Identification and procurement of Forest Fire equipment
  • Engage and interact with the local communities
  • Conduct surveys, field studies and making of research reports
  • Establish community organization in selected project sites (Develop and sign Term of Partnership)
  • Facilitate in developing awareness material
  • Organize and conduct community meetings, awareness sessions, training and
    consultative workshops and sessions with stakeholders
  • Facilitate field visits of tech partners, donor and senior colleagues to the project site
  • Prepare and submit monthly activity reports to WWF-Pakistan
  • Facilitate the scalability, replicability and adaptability of the technology
  • Assist in developing a response mechanism and enhance the capabilities of the user at all stages of disaster response
  • Assist in developing the follow up Funding Plan(outlining a business plan, map of system actors and a map of risks and assumptions)
  • Facilitate in detailing training needs, materials and resources and learning outcomes of engagements for response mechanism
  • Assist in preparing policy paper of learnings through working with government to secure provincial budget and uptake of the Early Warning System, and through supporting partnership agreements, including lessons to be share and any other assignment relevant to conservation work is given by the Senior
    Management, WWF

Eligibility Criteria

1. Postgraduate degree in Sociology/ Forestry/ Environmental Science or any other relevant
field
2. At least 2 years of working experience with a national / international organization
3. Work experience with WWF-Pakistan would be a great asset
4. Good at application of MS Office
5. Excellent in English and local languages, writing and communication skills
6. Physically fit for traveling / trekking in rugged mountain areas.
7. Familiarity with social, cultural and geo graphical context.
