The tri-island state of Grenada (consisting of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique) has a diverse blend of biomes representative of those found throughout the Caribbean region. These biomes include high-elevation forests, rivers, lakes, mangroves and coral reefs.
These ecosystems face adverse social drivers such as population growth, expansion of housing settlements and indiscriminate land-clearing practices. Additionally, as a Small Island Developing State, Grenada is especially vulnerable to external shocks and the impacts of climate change. This produces pressures such as soil erosion, land degradation, land use change and overall loss of species diversity in forest ecosystems. Meanwhile, coastal ecosystem pressures like coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion can lead to loss of defense against storms as well as loss of fish and other coastal species, affecting essential ecosystem services that benefit the well-being of humans and other life on Earth.
- The Grenada national ecosystem assessment was launched in 2024 and provides a comprehensive collation of the latest knowledge related to the status, trends and threats to the country’s biodiversity. Its key recommendations aim to enhance sustainable management of the country’s biodiversity with the engagement of various stakeholders, ranging from national decision makers to communities at the grassroots level.
- Grenada has been prioritized as one of the countries receiving catalytic support under BES-Net II’s BES Solution Fund to promote the uptake of the assessment recommendations. The seed fund provided is envisage to support (1) the application of innovative approaches for restoration and protection of terrestrial ecosystems through formal establishment of green spaces, (2) the generation of knowledge and best practices on the restoration of terrestrial ecosystems and their dissemination across various stakeholder groups, (3) the enhancement of protection and management of mangrove ecosystems through restoration and (4) the formalization and strengthening of the existing biodiversity platform.
Start of BES Solution Fund implementation period: 01 January 2026
Implementing agency: UNDP Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean multi-country office
Government partner: Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy of Grenada
