This event is an opportunity for Asian Countries and African countries to jointly advance air quality monitoring and clean air solutions – specifically through the “Africa Clean Air Programme” (ACAP). It is being co-organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), Climate & Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and Asia Pacific Clean Air Partnership (APCAP).

The event will:

• Showcase ACAP as a continent-wide, Africa-led response to air pollution and climate challenges, anchored in strong regional and national action.
• Provide updates on ACAP’s development, including the continental roadmap and efforts to establish a political and institutional framework through the AUC and RECs.
• Highlight country-level progress, particularly in Ghana and Senegal, where air pollution is being integrated into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and national policy, with CCAC support.
• Initiate dialogue on advancing a regional air quality agreement in Africa and the role international cooperation—especially with Japan—can play in supporting monitoring networks, capacity building, and technology transfer.

Why TICAD-9: TICAD offers a strategic opportunity to deepen Africa-Japan collaboration. By spotlighting ACAP at TICAD 9, we aim to:

• Elevate the visibility of ACAP within global development and climate dialogues.
• Foster South-South and Triangular Cooperation, building on Japan’s experience in Asia.
• Engage Japanese stakeholders—including government, private sector, and academia—in supporting air quality monitoring, data sharing, and innovation in Africa.
