Namibia faces some of the most pressing biodiversity challenges in Southern Africa. With over 90% of its land classified as arid or semi-arid, water scarcity is a daily concern—exacerbated by invasive alien species like Prosopis juliflora, which rapidly deplete groundwater and degrade land. Invasive insects such as termites further threaten agricultural productivity and ecosystem resilience.
Despite these challenges, Namibia has become a regional leader in sustainable conservation through its internationally acclaimed community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) approach. The country’s strong political will and grassroots efforts continue to drive biodiversity action and innovation.
To inspire young voices and raise awareness, Namibia is launching two national competitions for Namibian learners.
