On 17 January 2026, the BBNJ Agreement enters into force, representing the first major international treaty on ocean governance since UNCLOS. This webinar explores the promise, limitations, and future pathways of this landmark instrument. Drawing on her recent doctoral research, Farjana Hossain will discuss the Agreement’s legal innovations, institutional design, and key unresolved issues. As global attention shifts from negotiation to implementation, this discussion will reflect on what the BBNJ Agreement realistically offers – and what challenges remain – in governing biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction in an era of accelerating ecological change.
