The International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA) is organizing a discussion at Folkemødet exploring the connections between Indigenous Peoples’ worldviews, biodiversity conservation and rights.
The conversation takes its starting point in the experiences of the Kukama people in the Peruvian Amazon, where women from the community have advocated for the Marañón River to be recognized as a legal person and for their role as guardians of the river to be acknowledged. The discussion will examine how Indigenous knowledge systems and relationships with nature can contribute to understanding and addressing biodiversity challenges.
The event will explore the links between Indigenous Peoples’ cosmologies, biodiversity and human rights, highlighting the role Indigenous communities play in protecting ecosystems and stewarding natural resources.
