Biodiversity offsetting, the last step in the mitigation hierarchy and part of the European Union’s No Net Loss policy, has been identified as an important conservation tool. The effectiveness of offsetting for biodiversity conservation is highly variable and currently unquantified for wild pollinators, which are at risk in the EU due to land use change. Halting their decline requires at the very least no further loss of habitat, which biodiversity offsetting has the as-yet-unknown possibility to provide. Biodiversity offsetting, if properly implemented, can be an effective tool for pollinator conservation.
