Nature and People as One (NaPO) is a community-led conservation initiative revitalising dryland forests and rangelands across Marsabit County in northern Kenya. The initiative works through a structured governance model that shifts agency to pastoralist communities to lead restoration and natural resource management. NaPO’s approach centres on three major programmes: the Ramat model, Herder Conservation Network, and NaPO Conservation Cup. The Ramat model is based on promoting locally appropriate environmental restoration techniques such as Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), locally enforced bylaws or social fencing, and the removal of invasive species to restore critical habitats surrounding Mount Marsabit and strengthen climate resilience.
