Nature mainstreaming is defined as a process for systematically integrating nature into MDBs’ policies, analysis, assessments, advice, investments and operations to support a transition toward nature-positive, sustainable development (Adams et al. 2023; Dellmuth and Gustafsson 2021; WBG 2021a). When successful, nature mainstreaming in MDBs leads to significant shifts in investment portfolios. This can significantly contribute to halting and reversing biodiversity loss and can transform how banks engage with clients to support transitions toward nature-positive, resilient, and inclusive economic growth. A new paper by WRI and NatureFinance offers a first assessment of how they’re supporting nature.
