The Network of the Centers of Distinction on Indigenous and Local Knowledge, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization are organizing an online webinar on 17 November 2026. It will present the key messages on Indigenous Peoples and local communities from the IPBES Methodological assessment of the impact and dependence of business on biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people, known as the business and biodiversity assessment, which was completed in 2026.
The assessment examines the impacts of business on Indigenous Peoples, local communities and the environment. It also looks at the ways communities conceptualize and build their own sustainable economies and well-being, and the lessons this holds for broader society. It sets out ways forward and policy options. The assessment worked with Indigenous and local knowledge through dialogue workshops and contributions from authors across a range of disciplines and knowledge systems. Its key messages have been approved by IPBES member countries.
During the webinar, assessment authors will present the main findings. Indigenous Peoples and local communities will then reflect on their perceptions, experiences, management and governance related to business and biodiversity.
