This case study brings together the practices, decisions and lessons learned from applying a Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) to biodiversity management and climate change adaptation in Colombia. Developed through the Climate Promise + BES-Net alliance, the brochure documents how 22 Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and peasant organizations across Nariño, Putumayo, Caquetá, and Guaviare put HRBA principles – participation, equality and non-discrimination, and accountability – into practice in their own territories, from mangrove restoration in Tumaco to cocoa agroforestry in Caquetá and páramo stewardship in Puerres.
Structured around four sections: the alliance itself, the HRBA framework and UNDP’s toolkit, first-person case studies from three community organizations, and ten forward-looking lessons. The document centres community voices throughout, including quotes from women leaders, traditional knowledge holders, and Indigenous authorities. It closes with a set of good practices and final reflections on rights and sustainability, offering practical guidance for integrating HRBA into future biodiversity and climate programming with communities.
